Since I have Mediacom, I wanted to put up the games that will be available in Des Moines this spring. Most of the games are on ESPNU, which is in the "College Sports Tier" expansion pack on channel 178. I'm not sure if it is a standard channel or not, but satellite subscribers can also get this channel (DIRECTV Channel 614, DISH Network Channel 148). A couple of games are on ESPN2 (Mediacom channel 36) and the Championship is on ESPN (Mediacom 35), which pretty much everybody with cable or satellite has. CSTV/CBS College Sports (171 on Mediacom) usually has games as well, but they are not yet posted. The MLL has not finalized their schedule either, but I will post it once they do. I recommend that anyone interested in lacrosse, especially the Valley players, watch a few games this spring. The times listed are Central Time.

No Love for Valentine's Day
Okay, it really should say "No Lacrosse for Valentine's Day," but that just sounds silly. Despite the success of our first and second informal toss around/practices, the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association will not be holding an event this weekend. This really sucks because we had a great showing in our first event and an increase last weekend. Plus Valley should be completely empty, for once.
Unfortunately Mother Nature, being the selfish wench that she is, decided our days of 50s in February have to come to an end. She is greeting us with regular winter temperatures tomorrow which will last through the weekend. At this time, Saturday's high is only supposed to be 25, which means broken fingers, or at least real pain if the ball or an errant stick makes contact (plus, if you play outside all day and then put your tongue against your stick, it will get stuck!). With snow hitting tomorrow, conditions in the tennis court will be far less than ideal.
Hopefully the weather will clear back up and we can resume our practices on the 21st...

Not So Good RUMORS About MLL
Despite Kyle Harrison's optimism, Major League Lacrosse could be in a bad way this summer. It looks like four teams will fold for 2009 - Los Angeles, San Fransisco, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. The league owned Barrage defended their 2007 title by touring the country last year in an effort to find a market and a buyer. Now the 2008 champion Rochester Rattlers are looking to move to Toronto (I previously reported that the Rattlers were rumored to be heading to Orlando). The Washington Bayhawks have already moved to Annapolis. That means that only six of last year's ten teams will be playing; only four will be in the same city.
The good news is that despite fewer teams, the league should still be active this summer. That is more than can be said of the Arena Football League (although AF2 and the Barnstormers will be active in 2009). Luckily, my beloved Lizards are not among the dead - and the chances of them coming to Chicago this summer have now greatly increased!
Hopefully the next time I post about the MLL, I will have some good news...

Iowa State Cyclones 2009 Schedule
I have received the tentative schedule for the Iowa State Lacrosse Team. Sadly, they only play two games in Ames and they are the over the same weekend (although said weekend features many games to catch). If I get an updated schedule, I will post it as needed. The home games will be played at the fields south of campus next to Towers, near Welch and Mortensen. Admission is FREE, but bring a chair as there is no seating.

Very Successful 2nd Toss Around
With another bright and sunny February day looming over us, the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association held its second toss around. New faces from the Des Moines Lacrosse League site came out yesterday to join in the fun. Unfortunately, my dumbass forgot to bring the camera, despite my intentions to do so.
We originally planned on playing in the East Parking Lot once again, but Valley had other plans. Somehow I missed seeing a major debate thing going on at the school yesterday (I still maintain that it was not there!) and the high school players did not notify Zach until it was too late. Luckily, the snow had melted off of the tennis courts. They made a much more suitable place to play.
Once again, we started off by tossing and stretching; new people were introduced and new friends made. Then we moved into the enclosed area, threw on some pennies and got going with Ultimate Lax.
We did not last the entire two hours today because of tests and other commitments, but we did have a nice game. We talked a bit about the possibility of some Demons games and an adult rec league this summer. Counting 18 year old high school seniors, we now have the minimum number of players needed to travel. But, there is still plenty of room for more.
I want to thank everybody that showed up and I hope to see you again next week (weather permitting). Our current plan is to play every Saturday at noon somewhere on Valley's grounds or nearby. Should something change, I will post it here. If you are interested in joining us, contact me with your phone number in case we have to make last minute changes.
We are still trying to get something set up at the Soccer House as well. It will most likely be on a Tuesday or Thursday night wit ha $10 buy in. The response was fairly decent and the management were ok with us playing lax in there; I am just waiting to hear back from the Soccer House to confirm the available time.
I want to give a shout out to Caleb. He joined us today (purchasing my spare stick in the process) with no lacrosse experience. It did not take long for him to pick the game up. The experienced Minnesotans from Drake and Vally laxers were giving him props on his natural ability.
